Marine ecosystems consist of many species knit together in a tight web of dynamic interdependence. Yet, it is imperative that to gain predictive ability of marine ecosystem dynamics, particularly in times where the marine environment is changing faster than ever. How can we achieve increased and sustainable food production while maintaining resilient and healthy ecosystems?

To address this, activities at the Hjort Centre are divided into six themes. The first four focus on classes of mechanisms and aim to use modelling, laboratory and mesocosm experiments, and field observations to study them. The last two activities are integrative and will interact with each of the first four themes. The fifth theme aims to increase our capacity of observing marine ecosystems, including smarter data analysis. The last theme aims to synthesise findings and generate a stronger theoretical fundament for marine ecosystem dynamics through integrative modelling, by pitching models against other models and against data.
